Great Deals in Boston and Chicago

One of the best transit deals going in the U.S. is the $10 weekend fare on commuter rail. That $10 ticket covers unlimited travel throughout the extensive commuter network, along with two accompanying children ages 11 and under. The 12-route network extends as far as Providence, Rhode Island, Rockport, Wachusett and Plymouth. Although weekend schedules are less robust than weekday schedules, all routes run on Saturdays and only one, the relatively short Needham line, is idle on Sundays. Check the MBTA page for details.
With its weekend deal, MBTA follows Chicago’s Metra in offering a $10 unlimited travel weekend ticket. Of Metra’s 11 routes, the busiest lines all operate extensive weekend schedules. Two do not operate at all on weekends, however, and an additional line does not operate on Sundays. Check Metra for details.
