About Rail-Guru

We seek to be your guru (teacher, expert and guide) for all things to do with domestic and international rail travel. and editor, Ed Perkins, will highlight worldwide rail promotions, passenger rail news and upcoming excursions, along with reference material on railpasses, railcards, rail-airport access, and such. We will be an impartial information source though we will not hesitate to give our reviews and impressions of rail travel experiences that we’ve enjoyed or (sad to say) endured.

Through your comments, we’ll hope to share your tips and experiences with other travelers who gather here. Also, please don’t hesitate to tell us how we’re doing and how we can improve. We’re here to put you on the (forgive us) right track, on the best trains, to the best destinations, best prices and best stops on rail lines throughout the world.

I just read Ed Perkin’s article on solo travel. He said he didn’t know of any way to hack PPDO compartment prices on Amtrak. Actually, Amtrak’s compartment prices already start with the single traveller and then add in the coach equivalent for additional passengers. For example, I just booked a roomette for June from Chicago to Seattle for $1127. A second passenger would book that roomette at $1464.
